Biography
The British folk group Lorel included cult singer/songwriter Duncan Browne, and fellow singer/songwriter Davy Morgan, who had recorded a Joe Meek-produced single in 1965, though it's been speculated that Browne's girlfriend of the time also took part. Lorel was signed to Andrew Oldham's Immediate label around 1967 and they made some demos with Michael d'Abo of Manfred Mann producing. According to the liner notes for the CD reissue of Browne's Give Me Take You, Lorel did an unreleased single with d'Abo "apparently featuring the same Bach-derived motif that Procol Harum abstracted for their era-defining hit, A Whiter Shade of Pale. However, Lorel split before Browne went solo and did his 1968 Immediate album Give Me Take You; nothing by Lorel was released. The A-side of the unreleased single; the Browne-Morgan composition Here and Now, was eventually issued on the 2004 Duncan Browne compilation Journey: The Anthology 1967-1993. Not bearing an obvious resemblance to A Whiter Shade of Pale, it was a baroque pop-folk number whose harmonies showed a Beach Boys influence. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
