The Jazz Cannon
Biography
The New York-based, electronic-oriented rock outfit the Jazz Canon is a side project led by Billy Cote (the guitarist and songwriter for Madder Rose). The band originally got off the ground during the late '90s, when Cote sought an outlet to pen music in a different vein than the expertly crafted alt-pop of his full-time band. Whereas Madder Rose is more of traditional band, the Jazz Canon often finds Cote building the tracks on his own, adding rhythm tracks, guitars/keyboards, and other samples layer by layer, and sometimes collaborating with producer Don Greene. When it comes to vocals, Cote hands over the reins to the singer of Madder Rose, Mary Lorson (who Cote has praised as "one of the best singers I know"). Signed to the independent Function 8 record label, the Jazz Canon has issued a single, 1998's Daddy Ride, and a full-length album, 2000's Amateur Soul Surgery, thus far. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
