The band formed in 2012 when Johnny Took and Tommy O'Dell -- members of the local rock band Underlights -- started writing songs with guitarist Matt Mason. They quickly signed to the tiny label I Oh You on the strength of their home-recorded demos, and before long, their debut single, "Delete," climbed the charts and garnered praise from the press, musical peers, and a growing fan base. The group's self-titled debut EP surfaced in the summer of 2014, and in early 2016 they issued their debut full-length, Hills End. Late 2017 and early 2018 saw the release of the singles "Dawning," "In the Air," and "For Now" ahead of the arrival of their sophomore full-length effort, also titled For Now, later that April.
In 2019, DMA's released their first live album, MTV Unplugged Live, which captured one of the group's sets at the Melbourne Memo Music Hall in 2018. They returned in 2020 with third studio album The Glow, previewed by the singles "Silver" and "Life Is a Game of Changing." A month before the record's late April release date, the band issued a new version of "Life Is a Game of Changing" remixed by electronic legend Orbital. While continuing the anthemic choruses and stadium-filler sonics of their previous work, The Glow leaned even harder into their penchant for '90s rave production. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
