Yo-Yoz
Biography
Somehow, side one of the Chocolate Watchband's second LP, The Inner Mystique, ended up consisting of material that was not recorded by the Chocolate Watchband themselves, but by entirely different groups. Two of those non-Chocolate Watchband-affiliated songs were by the Los Angeles group the Yo-Yoz, which recorded the jazzy psychedelic instrumental Voyage of the Trieste and a cover of We the People's raga-rocker In the Past for producer Ed Cobb. Although they were never issued under the Yo-Yoz name, Cobb used them, with some overdubs, to fill out The Inner Mystique. Though it was a pretty unconscionable action to market these as Chocolate Watchband recordings, actually they're not bad period psychedelic numbers at all, particularly In the Past, though We the People's original version is better. A third Yo-Yoz track, The Uncharted Sea (actually an early take of Voyage of the Trieste), appeared on the 2005 Chocolate Watchband compilation Melts in Your Brain Not on Your Wrist: The Complete Recordings 1965 to 1967. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
