Biography
The Alleykatz were one of five Belfast groups included on the 1966 Ember Records LP compilation Ireland's Greatest Sounds: Five Top Groups from Belfast's Maritime Club. Included on that album was their unremarkable cover of Chicago Calling, a piano-rooted blues written by British blues pioneer Cyril Davies. The sound was thin too, but at least give them credit in this regard: almost all British R&B covers were of American songs, and Chicago Calling represented a rare instance in which a British blues artist was interpreted. The track has been reissued on the Big Beat compilation Belfast Beat Maritime Blues, an anthology of mid-'60s tracks by Belfast groups. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
