Biography
This Danish composer was an organist who compiled anthologies of music. Having the ability to perform on a number of instruments, Borchgrevinck served as a procurator for Christian IV. Melchior and other Danish composers were afforded the opportunity to study with Gabrieli. His own students included Pederson and Nielson when he acceded to the position of court organist. As an anthologist Borchgrevinck was responsible for the initial music production in Denmark. Some of his work -- with the inclusion of works by Monteverdi -- demonstrated his contemporaniousness. He included works of his own in each volume of his anthologies as well as pieces by other Danish composers. He dedicated some compositions to Christian IV of Denmark, and, some to King James I of England. Melchior was known throughout much of Europe and the genres of his work included madrigals, psalms and dances. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
