The British Columbian's first tracks, some of which were issued on Rottun, a label he started with fellow producer Downlink, were released toward the end of the 2000s. For his debut album, however, he signed on to Mau5trap. X Rated, featuring appearances from the likes of Downlink, Datsik, and Mr. Hudson, was released in 2011. He formed the supergroup Destroid with Downlink and Pendulum drummer KJ Sawka, who toured extensively and released the full-length The Invasion in 2013. Excision's more intense second album Codename X arrived in 2015, and debuted at number three on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart, aided by singles like "Bring the Madness" and "Robo Kitty." Throughout his ascent, Abel was active as a DJ and performer, and released annual mixes in his Shambhala series. His third full-length, Virus, followed in 2016 with guests such as Dion Timmer and Protohype. Behind singles "Africa" and "Final Boss," it debuted a spot higher on the dance chart.
The next year, Abel launched his prehistoric-themed music festival, Lost Lands, which featured Seven Lions, Zeds Dead, Kill the Noise, and more. In 2018, his fourth full-length arrived. Apex included collaborations with the likes of Space Laces, Illenium, Dion Timmer, and more. It became Excision's third album to reach the top ten of Billboard's dance chart. Right after the album was released, the inaugural edition of Abel's second festival, Bass Canyon, was held at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. Two EPs, Breaking Through (with Dion Timmer) and Evolution (with Wooli), were released in 2019. In 2020, Excision collaborated with Illenium and metalcore band I Prevail on a song called "Feel Something." Released by Astralwerks, the track reached number eight on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Abel founded another label, Subsidia, and frequently issued singles throughout the early 2020s. His fifth album, Onyx, appeared in 2022, preceding the launch of Abel's Paradise Blue Festival in CancĂșn, Mexico. ~ Andy Kellman & Paul Simpson, Rovi
