International avant jazz quartet Lily's Déjà Vu balance uncompromising improvisation with compositional elements drawing from jazz, rock, and modern composition, creating a sonic blend that can shift from shattering to contemplative to surprisingly tuneful at a moment's notice. Three of the four bandmembers are based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands: bassist
Jasper Stadhouders was born in Tilberg and is a noted contributor to the Amsterdam improvised music scene on both bass and guitar, playing in such groups as
Spinifex and the free jazz trio
Cactus Truck; a master's degree recipient from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Buenos Aires-born guitarist
Guillermo Celano first arrived in the Dutch city in 1999 and is a member of
the Celano/Baggiani Group and
Thelonious 4; and drummer
Marcos Baggiani, also born in Buenos Aires, moved to Amsterdam in 2001 to obtain his master's degree in jazz at the Conservatorium, and is a member of the aforementioned
Celano/Baggiani Group and
the Ambush Party.
Lily's Déjà Vu also includes Ingrid Laubrock on tenor saxophone; the quartet member with the highest profile thus far in international creative jazz and improvisation circles, the Stadtlohn, Germany-born Laubrock was part of the London avant/free jazz scene during the '90s into the new millennium before moving to Brooklyn in 2008 and becoming a key member of that N.Y.C. borough's creative music community, participating in various collaborative projects and leading her own ensembles including Sleepthief and Anti-House. Appearing live at Amsterdam's Trytone Festival and Jazz & World Meeting in 2012, Lily's Déjà Vu also recorded their debut album at the Tracking Room studio on April 20th of that year. Immediately after a CD launch tour of venues in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Norway in late September and early October of 2013, the quartet released the interestingly titled Music from Another Ass on the Trytone label. ~ Dave Lynch, Rovi
