Frigs
Biography
Toronto post-punk outfit Frigs craft songs that teeter between furious and hypnotic thanks to their commanding frontwoman, Bria Salmena. Salmena joined forces with guitarist Duncan Hay Jennings while they were both studying in Montreal; after they moved to Toronto, Jennings recruited his high-school friend Lucas Savatti to play bass. Initially known as Dirty Frigs, the band's early output -- which included a 2013 split EP with Spectre and a 2014 self-titled EP -- incorporated touches of swampy '50s rock and horror-movie imagery alongside grungy guitars. After those releases, they spent some time retooling. They resurfaced in 2016 as Frigs with Slush, their debut EP for Arts Crafts. Recorded in their apartment studio, the EP boasted a more polished, expansive sound that the band built on later that year with Chest/Trashyard, a single that provided the first taste of Frigs' debut album. Over a year in the making with the help of engineer Ian Gomes, Basic Behaviour was released by Arts Crafts in February 2018. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
