André Filho
Biography
The composer of a number of classics of the golden age of Brazilian song, Andre Filho's works, such as Cidade Maravilhosa, were recorded by several of the greatest performers of that period. With Noel Rosa, he wrote Filosofia. He also had success as a singer. Filho learned several instruments including violin, violão (acoustic guitar), mandolin, and piano. In 1929 Henrique de Melo Morais recorded Velho Solar. The following year, Carmen Miranda recorded O Meu Amor Tem and Quero Casar Com Você, and Sílvio Caldas recorded Nem Queiras Saber (with Felácio Silva). Mário Reis recorded Filosofia, which was written with Noel Rosa. The song was re-recorded in 1975 by Chico Buarque. In 1931, Carmen Miranda recorded Bamboleô and Quero só Você, and, two years later, with Mário Reis, Alô...Alô.... In 1935, Andre Filho was already a well-known composer when Aurora Miranda recorded the immortal Cidade Maravilhosa, an unofficial anthem of the city of Rio de Janeiro (made official in 1960). The song won an ironic second place at the municipal contest that year. Vicente Celestino had a big hit with Cinzas no Coração in 1941. As a singer, André Filho worked at the radio stations Educadora, Philips, Mayrink Veiga, Tupi, and Guanabara. He recorded 22 songs, almost entirely his own, from 1933 to 1939, through RCA Victor. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
