Pat Gribben
Biography
The chiming, jangling guitars of the Adventures' Pat Gribben didn't yield the widespread acclaim of fellow Irishman the Edge from U2. Although both weaved an epic feel and ethereal sound with their guitar styles, the Adventures' lack of success in America prevented Gribben from acquiring recognition outside of England and Ireland. Gribben was originally a member of the Irish punk group the Starjets; Gribben joined the band after the departure of Paul Bowen (vocals, guitar). In 1980, the Starjets broke up. When ex-Starjets vocalist Terry Sharpe formed the Adventures in 1984, Gribben became the songwriter and guitarist for the group. Gribben's dreamy riffs on the Adventures' 1985 debut album Theodore Friends illuminated the songs' romantic vision and sense of wonder. However, while the Adventures accumulated hits such as Send My Heart, Two Rivers, and Broken Land in the U.K., America offered a cold shoulder. After Lions and Tigers and Bears was released to disappointing sales in 1993, the band was dropped by their label; consequently, they went on hiatus. Gribben started co-writing an album with singer Ryan Molloy in 1995; Gribben also toured with him. In 2000, Gribben composed the music for the documentary video #Titanic -- Born in Belfast. ~ Michael Sutton, Rovi
