Biography
Rock drummer, songwriter, arranger, and producer Bobby Caldwell began his professional musical career playing with a group called Noah's Ark. They released two singles in 1967. He next joined up with Johnny Winter in his band. Next Caldwell was off to join Captain Beyond and he recorded with them on their self-titled debut. However, after the tour for that release, Caldwell left the group. He next played on Rick Derringer's All American Boy album, the two having played together previously in Winter's organization. He rejoined Captain Beyond after that recording session, touring for Sufficiently Breathless, although he does not appear on that album. When Captain Beyond broke up, he hooked back up with Derringer and Winter in Winter's band. He next joined a new group called Armageddon, but numerous tragedies caused that group to break up after only one album. At this point, Captain Beyond had found their way back together and Caldwell was working with them on their 1977 album, Dawn Explosion. They again fell apart, but Caldwell and bandmate Lee Dorman toured together in 1979, both under the name of Captain Beyond and Iron Butterfly. Caldwell has also played with the Allman Brothers and worked with the reunion of Captain Beyond. ~ Gary Hill, Rovi
