The Fringe
from Boston, MA
formed
January 1, 1978 (age 46)
Biography
Tenor-saxophonist George Garzone, a well-respected educator at Berklee and a versatile improviser, formed the Fringe (along with bassist Richard Appleman and drummer Bob Gullotti) so as to have an outlet in order to improvise quite freely. The original unit recorded three albums for their Ap-Gu-Ga label (named after the first two letters of their last names) during 1978-82. By the time of their fourth and thus far final release for their label in 1986, John Lockwood was the band's bassist. Under that lineup there made further recordings for Popular Arts (1989) and Soul Note (1992). The Fringe has been fairly popular in the Boston area and continues as a part-time group to the present time. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
