Sonic Sum
Biography
Best known as the group that initiated the recording career of underground MC/producer Rob Sonic, Sonic Sum are also comprised of Eric M.O. (producer/bassist), Fred Ones (DJ/producer), and Jean Duval (DJ/producer). Meshing live instrumentation with drum sampler-based production, the foursome composes dark and moody sonicscapes to embrace the myriad subject matter of frontman Rob Sonic's odd and abstract, but literate, rhymes. Although cut for indie imprint Ozone Music, the group's 2000 debut, The Sanity Annex, was released to critical acclaim worldwide in both mainstream and independent music-oriented press. Ozone also issued the 12" single Callarama Gala (2000) and Plaster Man (2002), an eight-song EP of unreleased material and remixes. For the group's second LP, Films, Rob Sonic initially failed to find U.S. distribution, and it was only released in Japan in 2003. However, the MC/producer brought the work over to New York indie Definitive Jux, his label home as a solo artist, for a proper U.S. release five years later. ~ Cyril Cordor, Rovi
