Biography
With their eponymous and very independent 1980 EP, Newark, England's Paralex figured among the very first wave of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands, and, like similarly overlooked contemporaries such as Witchfinder General and Legend, they showed an interesting propensity for slower-riffed songs à la Black Sabbath, rather than the more popular and speedy Motörhead and Priest disciples of the day. Formed at the end of the '70s by oft-out-of-tune vocalist Phil Ayling (their unquestionable weak link), guitarists Mark Gibson and Kev Bower, bassist Ian Dobbs, and drummer Neil Bryan, Paralex would eventually gain lasting fame by having their song White Lightning chosen for inclusion in Lars Ulrich's New Wave of British Heavy Metal '79 Revisited compilation. But they enjoyed little distinction and no additional official releases during their unnaturally long lifespan thereafter, finally giving up circa 1988. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
