Terry Sharpe
Biography
Like many new wave musicians, Terry Sharpe (vocals, guitar) has roots in punk rock. However, the Starjets, the punk band that Sharpe was a member of, had the misfortune of being compared to '70s teen heartthrobs the Bay City Rollers; the Starjets even covered the Archies early in their career. Sharpe formed the Starjets in 1976 with Sean Martin (bass), Paul Bowen (vocals, guitars), and Liam L'Estrange in Belfast, Ireland. Unable to land many gigs in Ireland, the group moved to London, England, in 1977. The Starjets were signed to Epic Records and in 1979 they released their first LP, God Bless the Starjets. The Starjets toured with the Tubes and Stiff Little Fingers, but they were unable to amass any Top 40 singles. After Bowen left the band, he was replaced by guitarist Pat Gribben. In 1980, the group started calling themselves Tango Brigade; however, artistic differences led to a splitup later that year. Sharpe briefly joined the Angelic Upstarts for a live album before reuniting with Gribben in the Adventures in 1984. The Adventures' debut album, Theodore Friends, was released in 1985. Unlike the Starjets, the Adventures accumulated numerous hits on the U.K. charts before recording their last LP, Lions and Tigers and Bears, in 1993. ~ Michael Sutton, Rovi
