Born in 1997 in Jung District, Daejeon, Baek became interested in singing at a young age, influenced by her love of artists like Beyoncé, Amy Winehouse, and Avril Lavigne. In 2007, she competed as a singer on the SBS variety show Amazing Contest Star King. Finishing in second place, she landed a spot as a trainee with JYP Entertainment. Over the next five years, she honed her skills, living in both South Korea and New York City where her family eventually relocated. In 2012, she debuted as a member of the duo 15 with singer Ji-min Park. Together, they released a handful of singles, as well as the 2014 full-length Sugar.
In 2015, Baek left 15 and released her debut solo EP, Frank, which included the single "Across the Universe." More singles followed, including "Bye Bye My Blue" and "Love You on Christmas. Also during this period, she began expanding her sound, working with other artists including Yuk Jidam, Dean, the Quiett, and others. In 2018, she paired with the indie rock outfit Bye Bye Badman to form the '90s-influenced side project the Volunteers. Together, they issued the grunge- and shoegaze-infused EP Vanity People. The following year, she released her second solo EP, Our Love Is Great, which featured the track "Maybe It's Not Our Fault."
Also in 2019, Baek parted ways JYP Entertainment and formed her own independent label, Blue Vinyl, issuing the song "Popo (How Deep Is Your Love)." That same year, she released her debut full-length album, Every Letter I Sent to You, which featured songs primarily sung in English. The album landed at number eight on the South Korean charts and spawned the number one single "Square (2017)." ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
