Gringo Star
from Atlanta, GA
Biography
Though Gringo Star is decidedly not the Latin Beatles tribute band its name might suggest, the outfit does deal in Fab-esque vocal harmonies and jangly Rickenbacker guitars, albeit with a neo-garage rock edge that’s as much Chicago as it is Cavern Club. Brothers Nick Furgiuele and Peter Furgiuele, plus Pete Delorenzo and Matt McCalvin, originally called themselves A Fir-Ju Well before adopting their new name. The Atlanta-based combo’s debut album, 2008's All Y'all, leaned toward the poppier end of the ‘60s garage spectrum, matching punk-ish energy with bubblegum melodies, shaking tambourine and reverb-y surf guitar lines, all while hiding socially-conscious lyrics underneath the catchy tunes. Also known for their admirable live work ethic, the combo pulled the neat trick of garnering enthusiastic attention from critics and fans alike. The band inked a deal with Brooklyn-based Gigantic Music for 2011's acclaimed Count Yer Lucky Stars, but chose to go the independent route for 2013's self-released Floating Out to Sea. The Sides and In Between, the band's fourth studio long-player and first for Nevado Music, dropped in August 2016. ~ Pemberton Roach, Rovi
