François Duval
January 1, 1672 - January 27, 1728 (age 56)
Biography
As a violinist and composer it is not remarkable that the works of Duval were written for the violin. It is important to note, however, that his were the first violin sonatas published in France. Between 1704 and Leclair's publications in 1723 approximately 24 volumes of violin sonatas were printed and distributed. The sonata, before this time, had not caught on in France as it was considered an Italian structure. His patrons consisted of the Duke of Orleans and the Duke of Noailles; the latter had him perform for Louis XIV. To these three people, Duval dedicated his first three opus. The compositions of Duval reflect the influence of Corelli and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the possibilities for the violin. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
