A native New Yorker, Bragen grew up on Manhattan's Lower East Side and graduated from Brown University's MFA Program in Literary Arts. He has seen a number of his own plays reach the stage, including The Hairy Dutchman, Spuyten Duyvil, Greater Messapia, Game, Set, Match, and This Is My Office, the latter of which was produced off-Broadway by The Play Company and received a Drama Desk Nomination for Best Solo Performance. In 2019, his play Notes on My Mother's Decline premiered at New York Theatre Workshop Next Door. He also co-translated Yukiko Motoya's Vengeance Can Wait, which was produced at PS122. In addition, Bragen has distinguished himself as a teacher, having held positions at Brown University, Franklin & Marshall College, Ohio State University, and Barnard College.
Along with his own work, Bragen has regularly collaborated with the jazz saxophonist and composer John Ellis on a number of projects. The duo's first work, the music and poetry project Dreamscapes, premiered at The Jazz Gallery in December 2007. Their second work, The Ice Siren, an hour-long jazz chamber operetta, premiered in May 2009. A similar work, Mobro, premiered in 2011 and was released on album in 2014. In 2020, Bragen and Ellis released a recorded version of The Ice Siren, featuring vocals by Miles Griffith and Gretchen Parlato. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
