Biography
An offshoot of the eclectic indie rock ensemble Oneida, People of the North is an improvisational duo featuring Bobby Matador on keyboards and Kid Millions on drums, with the two creating constantly shifting soundscapes rooted in post-rock noise-making and hands-on electronics, with a dash of psychedelic wanderlust thrown in. While Matador and Millions are the core members of People of the North and the two constants in their body of work, they often bring in other musicians to collaborate with them on-stage and in the recording studio, and on occasion the entire Oneida lineup has appeared in concert as People of the North. The duo made its recorded debut in 2010 with the album Deep Tissue, released by the indie label Jagjaguwar Records and featuring guitar work from Shahin Motia of Ex Models. The two-disc set Steep Formations followed in 2012. In 2013, People of the North moved from Jagjaguwar to Thrill Jockey Records, issuing their third album, Sub Contra. The year 2015 saw the release of People of the North's fourth full-length, Era of Manifestations (the title was drawn from the history of the Shaker faith, a subject of interest to Millions), which was compiled from a five-hour improv session with Matador, Millions, and bassist Richard Hoffman of Sightings. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
