Biography
Nashville-based indie combo Promised Land Sound play a mix of artful country-rock and gently psychedelic pop with a vintage flavor. Made up of a group of young but seasoned players who emerged from Nashville's fertile garage scene, they quickly set themselves apart by relying more on twang, soul, and pop than raw swagger. Main songwriting duties fall to singer/bassist Joey Scala and guitarist Sean Thompson, with Scala's younger brother Evan rounding out the original trio on drums and vocals. They eventually recruited keyboardist Ricardo Alessio and found an immediate fan in Jack White, who released their live single "Yes You Can" in 2013. After signing with North Carolinian indie Paradise of Bachelors, Promised Land Sound delivered their self-titled debut later that same year. Not long after the album's release, Alessio left and the band continued to tour as a trio, supporting acts like Alabama Shakes and Angel Olsen. Promised Land Sound expanded once more, borrowing guitarist/singer Peter Stringer-Hye from Nashville psych group the Paperhead and Fly Golden Eagle keyboardist Mitch Jones to create the quintet that would be responsible for their sophomore album. Released in October 2015, For Use and Delight offered a more unified and ultimately refined sound showing off the band's evolving songwriting and instrumental chops. ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi
