Gregory Whitehead has done a variety of work in the arts. He is best known for his 50 plus "radiophonic" works, radio features which mix the human voice, text, sounds, and music. These radio pieces were preceded by performing in experimental theater and improvised music. Whitehead's accomplishments also include his recorded experiments with voice, essays on language, directing the Nantucket production studio Sea-Crow Media, and co-editing the book of essays -Wireless Imagination: Sound, Radio and the Avant-Garde (MIT Press, 1994). Several of his radio works were commissioned by American Radio, including "Display Wounds" (1986), "Lovely Ways to Burn" (1990), "Shake, Rattle and Roll" (1992), and "The Thing About Bugs" (1994), the last a collaboration with Christof Migone. Another work of note is his "Pressures of the Unspeakable" (1991), which resulted from setting up a "national scream line," with answering machine, to collect screams to create this piece for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
