Biography
Composer of successful songs, recorded by Aracy de Almeida, Carlos Galhardo, Deo, and other famous interpreters. Until 1938, Valdemar Gomes worked as sailor, seller, cinema doorman, and bomber. In that year, he became friends with Zé da Zilda and Ataulfo Alves, then with Secundino Silva, Dunga, and Cícero Nunes. He had already written several songs, but the first time he showed some verses of one song was for Cícero Nunes. Nunes liked it and added an A part to the song, which became "Quando Anoitecer," recorded by Trio de Ouro in 1940. In that year, he became the crooner of Assírio's. The other nightclubs where he would work in the '40s were Eldorado, Samba, Farolito, Avenida, Brasil, and Austral. In 1942, Araci de Almeida recorded "Coberta de Ouro" (with Afonso Teixeira). In the next year, Francisco Alves and Dalva de Oliveira recorded, as a duet, "Dois Corações" (with Herivelto Martins). From then on, Newton Teixeira, Marino Pinto, Mário Rossi, and other important composers, became his partners. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
