Biography
The name of the small (11-member) Czech choir Martinu Voices denotes not a concentration on the music of Bohuslav Martinu but rather a tribute to his attitude: He drew inspiration from many eras and forms of music from across Europe, but never lost sight of his Czech origins. Martinu Voices performs a pan-European repertory drawn mostly from music of the 19th through the 21st centuries, but stretches as far back as the Renaissance. At least two-thirds of the music the choir performs is not Czech, but Czech music's role is significant, and in 2014 Martinu Voices joined the Czech Philharmonic under Jiri Belohlavek for a performance of their namesake's rarely heard 1952 English-language opera What Men Live By. Martinu Voices was founded in 2010. The group's members are all conservatory graduates and professional singers with wide experience outside of choral singing. Belohlavek and several other major Czech musical figures were supporters of the choir in its early days. The director of Martinu Voices since its founding has been Lukas Vasilek, also the conductor of the Prague Philharmonic Choir and, until 2009, the Foerstrova Chamber Choir; he has also performed jazz in collaboration with Bobby McFerrin.

Martinu Voices has performed concerts of its own, appeared at the Prague Spring music festival and other top Czech festivals, and collaborated with leading Czech orchestras including the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra on multiple occasions. They joined Britain's Tallis Scholars for a performance at the 2016 Prague Dvorak Festival. Martinu Voices has released several albums on the Czech national label Supraphon, more closely associated with Czech music than are their concert programs. A 2014 album was devoted to choral music by composer Jan Novak (1921-1984), and a 2016 release covering music by the Classical-period composer Jakub Jan Ryba earned Diapason d'Or Choice designation in France. The year 2018 saw a pair of releases, one devoted to madrigals by Martinu, and the other a performance of the Cantata for the Coronation of Leopold II by composer Leopold Kozeluch, written for the same occasion as Mozart's La clemenza di Tito. ~ James Manheim, Rovi
