Joachim Thibault de Courville
Biography
This French singer, composer, lyre player and lutenist was praised by Baif as the master of the art of good singing. Courville composed a number of melodies for Baif, some of these pieces having been performed for Charles IX. As a co-founder of the "Academie de Poesie et Musique" all of the music composed by its members were left unpublished; accordingly, there is no original extant music of Courville's. Fortunately some of his pieces were printed in collections and preserve his tendencies towards homorhythms, following the meters of the verse, and single melodic lines with lute acompaniment. Some of his music contains shortened note durations of an already stated theme, to quicken the pace, extended melismatically. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
