Biography
Multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer Vaughan Mason managed the 21st Century, who are best known for the classic Chicago soul ballad "Remember the Rain," a 1975 RCA single. After he moved from Chicago to New York, Mason became an audio engineer and worked on sessions for B.T. Express. A short-lived group he assembled, Vaughn Mason Crew, signed with Brunswick Records. With lead vocals by Jerome Bell, the single "Bounce, Skate, Rock, Roll" bounced to number five R&B and number 81 pop in early 1980. The similarly titled album went to number 25 R&B later that year, while additional singles "Roller Skate" and "Jammin' Big Guitar" were less successful. Mason later recorded two charting R&B singles for Salsoul with Butch Dayo: "You Can Do It" (late 1982) and "Party on the Corner" (spring 1983). Mason started another group, Raze, who had a Top 24 R&B Columbia single with the house jam Break 4 Love during the fall of 1988. During the tail-end of the decade and into the '90s, he continued to assist with recordings for the likes of Doug Lazy, Pam Shelby, and DJ Pope. ~ Ed Hogan, Rovi
