The son of a fiddle, flute, and concertina player and teacher, Bobby Casey continued his father's legacy a step further. Respectfully known as "the maestro," Casey is remembered for his gentle, but imaginative, fiddling. Playing the fiddle since childhood, Casey was deeply inspired by American recordings of traditional Irish music. As a youngster, he studied with Junior Crehan, a fiddler who had studied with his father. A longtime friend of uilleann pipe player Willie Clancy, Casey temporarily relocated, with Casey, to Dublin in 1950. While there, he was befriended by traditional Irish folk musicians and song collectors John Kelly and the Potts Family, from whom he learned many tunes. Moving to London in 1952, Casey played regularly at Sunday morning sessions at the Favourite and Bedford Arms pubs. He recorded his debut album, Casey in the Cowhouse, in 1959. Joined by piper/vocalist Seamus Ennis, Casey performed at the first Willy Clancy summer school in 1973. He moved to Northampton in 1992. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
