Ian Robb holds a job in a Canadian children's hospital, where he runs an electron microscope, but the work of his heart is clearly rooted in British traditional music. In addition to recording as a solo artist, crafting songs, and playing the concertina, he is a member of several musical groups. He helped establish the Friends of Fiddler's Green in Toronto, an ensemble that is approaching the 30-year mark. He also teamed with Ann Downey and Shelley Posen to form the Finest Kind trio in Ottawa. He has also performed with the Old Sod Band. At other times, he partnered with David Parry and Grit Laskin in different duos. In addition, his musical duties include running his label, Fallen Angle. The body of Robb's songwriting includes They're Taking It Away, a protest of social cuts in Canada, and The Old Rose Crown, which has turned into something of an anthem. Robb has devoted time to the Old Sod Folk Music Society in Ottawa as artistic director, he also founded the organization. The magazine Sing Out! Regularly feature's his columns, which are published under the title the British North America Act.

Music has always been a part of Robb's life. As a child in London, he sang soprano in a choir at Westminster Abbey for several years. When the 1960s rolled around and Robb grew into a teenager, he found the folk revival scene in England. He was drawn to the folk clubs, where he worked at refining his voice and his abilities in relation to folk songs. By the following decade, he settled in Canada, where he was soon drawn to a folk club called Fiddler's Green. During this time, he also began playing the concertina.
