Biography
Akkord (sometimes stylized as ?kkord) is an electronic music duo from Manchester, England, whose hard-to-pin-down sound traverses the spectrum ranging from sparse, experimental drum'n'bass to heavy, dread-filled post-dubstep. The duo was formed in 2011 by Synkro (Joe McBride) and Indigo (Liam Blackburn), drum'n'bass/dubstep producers who had previously released several collaborative 12" singles together. Akkord's first two releases came in the form of self-released white-label singles in 2012, both containing highly detailed bass-heavy abstract dance music. The duo soon signed with Fabric sublabel Houndstooth, and released the dark, dubby Navigate EP in May of 2013. Akkord's self-titled debut full-length arrived by the end of the year, exploring dark ambient textures as well as mutated U.K. garage-influenced beats, putting them in the company of artists such as Demdike Stare and Objekt. The duo paid tribute to their jungle roots in 2014, starting with a split 12" with Paul Woolford's Special Request moniker in which the two projects remixed each other's songs. Akkord's HTH020 EP, released the same year, included breakbeat-heavy track "Continuum" alongside more murky, abstract material. Remix 12" HTH030 finished out the year, containing HTH020 tracks remixed by the Haxan Cloak and Vatican Shadow. Both EPs, along with remixes by Regis and Fis (later released as a separate 12"), were released as the CD compilation HTH035 in 2015. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
