Biography
A contemporary of Leon Bridges and Andra Day, Jonny P (born Powell) is a retro-soul singer and songwriter originally from the Bronx, New York City. Raised with gospel, R&B, and hip-hop, he didn't decide to pursue singing professionally until he was in college, and started writing songs in his mid-twenties, around the time he made the move to Nashville. With shades of early Motown, his self-released debut EP, Right to You, arrived in the summer of 2014. When it came time to track his second EP, he flew to Los Angeles in order to work with drummer James Gadson (Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers) and, as a result, mixing engineer Tom Elmhirst (Adele, Amy Winehouse). Before it saw release, he got the call that he'd been cast in a small role in the Kathryn Bigelow film Detroit, about the 1967 riot, and returned to L.A. for filming. The five-track Good to You was eventually released on Big Picnic Records in April 2017, four months prior to the film's premiere. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
