Acre
Biography
Acre is a mysterious producer from Manchester, England who constructs scattered, obtuse tracks that fall somewhere between grime, dubstep, and experimental techno. While some of his tracks are more spacious and measured, others feature clattering beats, plunging bass tones, and abrasive, distorted synths. His tracks first began appearing on German label Saturate!Records in 2011, followed by appearances on King Deluxe and Lowriders Recordings in 2012. By 2013, his sound had reached the ears of forward-thinking grime and dubstep DJs such as Visionist and Pinch; Acre's Forgotten EP appeared on Visionist's Lost Codes label, and his track "DXTR" was included on Tectonic Plates, Vol. 4 (released by Pinch's Tectonic Recordings). The 12" EP Icons followed on Tectonic in 2014, along with EPs on Project 13 MCR and Cold Recordings. In 2015, Acre collaborated with Filter Dread on the Interference EP released by Visionist's Codes imprint, and he shared a split 12" with Hodge on the Wisdom Teeth label. Near the end of the year, Acre's debut full-length, Better Strangers, appeared on Tectonic. The album was Acre's most intensely personal and experimental work yet, but unlike other debut albums by experimental grime producers, it wasn't quite as dark or punishing, and it still paid attention to the dancefloor. Following the 2017 single "City" (on Brainmath), Acre moved to Opal Tapes for the 2018 release of his second full-length, Hollow Body. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
