Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner
from Hamilton, OH
January 1, 1943 - January 26, 2013 (age 70)
Biography
Guitarist and vocalist Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner was a member of Ohio Players dating back to 1964, when the band was known as the Ohio Untouchables. Bonner co-wrote and played on some of the biggest funk hits of the '70s, including "Skin Tight," "Fire," "I Want to Be Free," "Love Rollercoaster," and "Fopp." In the '80s, he briefly went solo; signed to Warner Bros., he released the 1985 album Sugar Kiss with backing from Zapp, along with production from Zapp's Roger Troutman. Though it deserved to do as well as The New Zapp IV U, released the same year, it lacked a knockout song like "Computer Love" and did not chart. Bonner continued to tour with the Ohio Players and even led a version of the band during the 2000s. He died in Trotwood, Ohio on January 26, 2013 at the age of 69. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
