Biography
Female gospel quartet the Brown Singers were formed in Memphis, Tennessee in the late '70s by Willie Mae Richmond (whose maiden name was Brown) and quickly garnered a following for their beautiful and energetic vocal performances. Richmond's granddaughter, Lisa Knowles, joined the quartet when she was nine years old and still in the fifth grade, and by the time she turned 12, she was the lead singer. The Knowles-led version of the quartet performed with the same flair and soulful sound as the original group, but added more of a modern and contemporary flavor to the mix, helped by Knowles' fine gospel songwriting. A debut album, Experience the Evolution - Live, was released in 2008, with the Marque Walker-produced The Evolution Continues arriving from One Voice Records in 2014. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
