One of the pioneer jazz writers and discographers, Delauney was along with Hugues Panassie, the most important French nonmusician in early jazz. He helped found the Hot Club of France in 1933, an organization that would soon sponsor a quintet featuring Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. In 1935 Delauney started Jazz Hot, one of the first jazz magazines. In 1937 he formed the Swing label which documented many important sessions. Delauney was active on radio from 1939 on, organized concerts and produced many record sessions; he was also an early jazz educator. Charles Delauney's Hot Discography in 1936 was the first important detailed listing of jazz recordings ("discography" was a term invented by him) and just one of his many important achievements. Panassie, formerly a good friend of Delauney, broke with him in the mid-1940s because of his openness to bebop. In 1949 Delaunay organized the Paris Jazz Festival (one of the world's first jazz festivals) which typically for him featured both Sidney Bechet and Charlie Parker.
