Biography
David Lasley was a southern California singer who released three albums; Soldiers on the Moon, issued in late 1990 on the obscure Agenda label, was his first in seven years. His two EMI albums, Missing Twenty Grand and Raindance, were long out-of-print. The style of this high-voiced, technically unparalleled singer was informed by Motown, the sound of his native Detroit, but his blend of theatricality and innocence gave his work unique warmth. In 1982, Twenty Grand contained a bold declaration of homosexuality, "Looking for Love on Broadway." His later work was gender-free. Lasley backed the likes of Luther Vandross, Roxy Music, and James Taylor, but he was a stunning singer on his own. David Lasley died on December 9, 2021 at the age of 74. ~ Carlo Wolff, Rovi
