Che was the solo recording alias of Alix Plain (born Alex Johnson), who previously led Liverpool's Modern Eon, an overlooked post-punk band of the late '70s and early '80s. After Modern Eon broke up, four-fifths of the group continued as This Time Next Year while Plain opted to go solo. Signed to Desire, he debuted his Che project in 1983 with the What You've Been Through Is Love 12" single. A couple years passed until 1989's full-length Narcotic. Supported by a pair of 12" singles, the album was produced by On-U Sound's Adrian Sherwood; it also featured instrumental help from Sherwood's cronies (and Sugar Hill veterans) Skip McDonald, Doug Wimbish, and Keith LeBlanc. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
