Baby Gopal
Biography
Baby Gopal was a New York based quartet that combined elements of American punk and British alternative rock during their relatively short-lived existence in the ‘90s. The band formed around lead singer Sri, an Australian expatriate who found her way to the States and fell in with the New York hardcore scene. Having grown up in an entertainment-oriented family in Bondi Beach (her father owned a nightclub), Sri traveled through Europe, Asia, and Africa after leaving school, absorbing the various cultures. In 1995, she moved to New York City and, with several other members of the local punk scene, formed Baby Gopal. A year later, the fledgling act released a couple singles through the Caroline-affiliated Get-Go Records, followed by a self-titled, full-length album in 1997. The release was well-received and the group began to build a following through constant touring and college radio airplay. However, the quartet disintegrated soon after jumping to Tommy Boy, leaving Sri to pursue a solo career. ~ Tom Demalon, Rovi
