Filipe de Magalhaes
from Azeitão, Portugal
January 1, 1571 - December 17, 1652 (age 81)
Biography
As the favorite pupil of Manual Mendes at Evora Cathedral, Magalhaes acceded to the position of the greatest Portugese composer of his time. The expressiveness of his choral works relevant to the textual settings were unsurpassed. Magalhaes conducted the royal chapel choir and his teacher left him all of the music which Mendes had composed in the hopes that it would one day be published. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
