Cool Uncle
Biography
Bobby Caldwell and Jack Splash are Cool Uncle, a collaboration that, given the artists' previous output, has resulted in an unsurprisingly dapper brand of R&B. Caldwell is known most for "What You Won't Do for Love," a 1979 Top Ten pop hit that became a kind of standard, covered dozens of times over. His discography of well over a dozen albums, which includes the oft-sampled and reinterpreted likes of "Open Your Eyes" and "My Flame," goes much deeper than that single. Producer Splash's work with Jennifer Hudson, Jazmine Sullivan, Melanie Fiona, and Cee Lo Green has led to Grammy Awards. He has led the free-spirited funk band PlantLife and produced tracks for Alicia Keys, John Legend, and Kendrick Lamar, among dozens of other high-profile singers and rappers. In 2015, Caldwell and Splash debuted their partnership with "Break Away," featuring vocalist Jessie Ware, and "Breaking Up," featuring soul legend Deniece Williams and rapper Eric Biddines. The two easy-grooving songs, both rhythmically robust updates of sophisticated late-'70s/early-'80s R&B, led to a self-titled album released that November. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
