Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and raised in Colorado, where she played in bands throughout high school, Johansing later attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston for a couple years before settling down in the California Bay area. She immersed herself in the music, film, and art scenes there, and participated in open-mike nights. Eventually collaborating with Geographer, she also contributed to albums by tUnE-yArDs, Mirah, and Thao Nguyen, among others. In the meantime, she released her first album, Many Seasons, in 2010. Co-produced by Johansing, Jeremy Harris, and Robert Shelton, the darker Grand Ghosts followed in 2013.
Johansing then focused on the short-lived Yesway, a singer/songwriter duo she formed with Emily Ritz. They released a self-titled album in 2014 before parting ways. A label she co-founded with Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker and songwriter Jeff Manson, Night Bloom Records issued her third full-length 2017's The Hiding, which she'd completed in Los Angeles after moving downstate. Johansing produced her next album with help from Tim Ramsey (Vetiver, Fruit Bats). Released on Night Bloom in 2020, the Rob Schnapf-mixed No Better Time featured appearances by Trevor Beld-Jimenez (Tall Tales the Silver Lining), Amir Yaghmai (Julian Casablancas the Voidz), and longtime Devendra Banhart bassist Todd Dahlhoff. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
