Tom Morris
Biography
The Tom Morris who produces the television series #America's Most Wanted is not the same fellow who runs the Morrisound recording studio in Tampa, FL, and who has worked on a towering pile of sides, including lots of heavy metal rocking. The way many rock bands seem to perceive it, however, the Tom Morris of Tampa represents an "America's Most Wanted" figure on his own terms, minus the police blotter. Thrashers and grungites looking for engineering and producing skills have journeyed to his door, some of them crossing oceans to get there. Of course, Morris is also involved in much music from the immediate neighborhood and the South in general, using his skilled ears and finely tweaked gear to capture a diverse range of sounds such as the vital jazz fusion of the Dixie Dregs and an underrated mid-'90s hard bop effort by jazz saxophonist and educator Jack Wilkins.
Morris is also quite active in education himself, busily hosting workshops by important musicians visiting Florida, sitting on panels discussing aspects of the recording industry, and hosting seminars for budding engineers in his own studio facilities. He is an example of a producer whose mastery of actual recording skills serves him well, allowing him most importantly to have gained crucial understanding of sonic demands imposed by specialized genres. A single caveat has been found in the memoirs of a German thrash bandmember: "Tom Morris is a really laid-back guy -- possibly too quiet for Kreator, he should have kicked us more." ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
