Biography
Juca Kalut, one of the historic chorões of the Belle Époque, was a member of the Cavaquinho de Ouro group, named after the music and instrument store located at 40 Carioca street in Rio de Janeiro, where famous chorões like Heitor Villa-Lobos, Quincas Laranjeiras, Anacleto de Medeiros, Mário Cavaquinho, Luís de Sousa, and others met. Respected as a composer, some of his songs had lyrics by Catulo da Paixão Cearense and Hermes Fontes. Among his compositions may be mentioned the valsas-cançãos Por Que Sorris, Porque Eu Fui Poeta, and Só No Céu (lyrics by Catulo); the schottisches Campestre (which had lyrics by Catulo renamed O Meu Mistério) and A Rola (lyrics by Catulo); and the valses Camponesas, Sorrir Dormindo, and Irene. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
