Biography
Formed in Bristol in late 2008, Zun Zun Egui was created when Mauritian guitarist and singer Kushal Gaya joined with Yoshino Shigihara, after they had both just moved to the U.K. They jammed with a number of musicians before deciding on the core formation, which included bassist Luke Mosse and drummer Matt Jones. "Zun Zun Egui" is a term used in the Basque language for a group of trees, but when Shigihara spotted it while visiting, she realized it sounded like the Japanese words for “Fast Fast Weird.” The band's early D.I.Y. output was raw and experimental until they formed a clear vision of where they wanted to take their music -- mixing the styles of Tropicalia, punk, funk, Afrobeat, and Ethiopian jazz. This all came to light with their debut album, Katang, released on Bella Union. Following the release, bassist Mosse left the band and was replaced by Adam Newton; the group proceeded to tour the U.K and Europe. In 2013, Zun Zun Egui decided to extend the lineup with a second guitarist, Stephen Kerrison, and began working on new material. In 2014, they recorded their second album, Shackles' Gift, at Kore Studios in London. It was produced by Fuck Button's Andrew Hung and released in early 2015. ~ James Pearce, Rovi
