Born in 1996 in Freemans Reach, New South Wales, Australia, Hemmings started playing guitar around age ten. He eventually took lessons and by his teens was busking on street corners and posting covers songs online. It was also while in his teens that he formed the punk-pop-influenced band 5 Seconds of Summer with schoolmates Calum Hood and Michael Clifford. They group emerged to massive success, touring with One Direction and hitting number one in several countries with their 2014 self-titled debut. More number one albums followed and by 2018 the group had matured into a sophisticated, '90s alt rock-influenced ensemble. In June 2021, Hemmings released his debut solo album, When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, which included the Sammy Witte-produced single "Starting Line." ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
