The 48-year-old Indiana native is perhaps best known from his five years as a member of the Flirtations. Townsend joined the group in 1989, recorded two albums with them, and toured extensively across the United States, Canada and Germany. The group that started singing in the streets reached their career pinnacle in 1994 by playing Carnegie Hall and appearing in the film Philadelphia.
