Clive Burrows
Biography
Clive Burrows is part of a generation of players who succeeded as saxmen in the shadow -- and for a time in the heart -- of the British beat boom and the British invasion. His early gigs on sax were with such groups as the Wes Minster Five (where he crossed paths with singer/keyboard player Zoot Money) and Zoot Money's Big Roll Band. He also co-founded the Ian Bird Quintet in London. Among his early outfits, most especially the Big Roll Band, he played r&b more than jazz, but eventually he gravitated back toward his first love, founding the New Jazz Orchestra in 1965. He later left the group -- which was taken over by Neil Ardley -- for the Alan Price Set, where he stayed for two years, and then the Gene Washington Band, where he played baritone sax and served as the group's arranger. Since the 1980's, Burrows has owned and operated his own audio production company. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
