Biography
Jim Colgrove has been part of the music scenes of at least four major cities across as many decades, at least three of which would probably be worth writing a memoir about -- except that he's mostly been so busy making music that he's apparently never sat down to write about it. Colgrove was a friend of drummer N.D. Smart in Dayton, OH when the two took up with a pair of Boston folkies and ended up playing bass in the band that became Bo Grumpus, which got transplanted from Beantown to New York City. They were part of the late-'60s music scene in the city, and left behind one great album before a forced name-change made their future untenable. That happened just in time to help facilitate the formation of Mountain by their producer, Felix Pappalardi (incidentally, featuring the ubiquitous N.D. Smart...). He subsequently moved back to the folk scene, sort of, as part of Great Speckled Bird, and then to some gigs with Todd Rundgren. Later, it was back to roots rock with Sid King, and on to Fort Worth, TX and the Juke Jumpers, doing blues. And more recently his band Lost Country. He also has his own record label, Cool Groove. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
