Biography
Helm is the dark ambient/noise project of Luke Younger, a London-based sound artist with roots in hardcore punk and industrial. His often lengthy compositions are constructed using electronic equipment and found or modified instruments, and often feature swelling drones of harsh, rusty feedback as well as more structured, rhythmic elements. Younger initially became known as one-half of Birds of Delay, his experimental duo with Steven Warwick (later known as Heatsick), who released over two-dozen LPs, 7"s, cassettes, and CD-R's between 2005 and 2010. After a few releases under his own name, Younger began using the name Helm for his solo work in 2006, and released limited CD-Rs and tapes over the next few years on labels including Blackest Rainbow, Peasant Magik, 905 Tapes, and RRRecords (as part of the label's long-running Recycled Music series). Helm's first vinyl release was 2010's To an End, which was also the first release on Younger's Alter label. This was followed in 2011 by Cryptography on Graham Lambkin's Kye. 2012 saw the release of Geneva Cave, a limited cassette on Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions, as well as Impossible Symmetry, Helm's debut LP for Bill Kouligas' Pan label. Painstakingly created over the course of a year, the album was Younger's most ambitious and sonically impressive work to date, and was well-received by several experimental music publications. Pan and Alter co-released Helm's 2013 12" EP Silencer, which was quickly followed by sister EP The Hollow Organ in early 2014. Also in early 2014, Matthew Mondanile's New Images label released Impasse, an LP edition of a limited Helm CD-R from 2008 including previously unreleased material. Helm's next proper full-length was 2015's Olympic Mess, a double LP on Pan which emphasized the rhythmic, loop-based elements of his sound while remaining chaotic and unpredictable. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
