Biography
Saddlesore was an obscure Red Krayola spinoff of sorts, the lineup including Red Krayola mainstay Mayo Thompson and original Red Krayola drummer Rick Barthelme. Thompson and Barthelme co-wrote both sides of Saddlesore's sole release, the 1970 single Old Tom Clark/Pig Ankle Strut, which came out on the Texas Revolution label (around the same time as Thompson's solo album Corky's Debt to His Father, which also came out on Texas Revolution). Old Tom Clark sounded rather like a warped acid-folk cowboy ballad, while Pig Ankle Strut was more in the rambling, oddly structured style of subsequent Red Krayola releases from the late '70s onward, though with more psychedelic-era instrumentation. Both sides of this rare 45 were reissued on the Red Krayola CD compilation Singles 1968-2002. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
